Challenges

Church Hill House faced rising electricity costs and increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact in line with NHS sustainability goals. In response, the Trust sought a long-term, cost-effective solution to decarbonise its energy usage without impacting patient care or operational efficiency.

There were a few issues to navigate such as the age of the building in relation to cabling and connection therefore Outline design was key to ensuring routes and connections were agreed prior to commencement. This mitigated delay and disruption when installing on site. The hospital was operational and access to certain areas were difficult, so comprehensive scaffold and access plans were developed to manage logistics and keep to agreed project timescales.

Solution

By partnering with a solar energy provider, Berkshire NHS Trust installed a 31.4kW Solar PV system comprising 74 solar panels. This solution was designed to reduce reliance on grid electricity and slash carbon emissions, contributing to the NHS’s ambitious carbon reduction targets.

This solar installation at Church Hill House is a critical milestone in Berkshire NHS Trust’s sustainability journey. The Trust not only contributes to the national Net Zero NHS initiative but also ensures long-term operational savings that can be reinvested into patient care and service improvements.
