North Bristol NHS Trust provides hospital and community healthcare to the residents of Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and North Somerset.  In 2019, North Bristol NHS Trust made a public pledge to be carbon neutral by 2030 with the aim to be a leader in sustainable healthcare and create a healthier and happier future for their local community.

North Bristol NHS Trust have been working with partners in the Integrated Health System to develop a Green Plan to identify the areas they can get maximum effect and benefit to deliver cost savings, carbon savings and environmental improvements. The sustainable development team identified that they could not only significantly reduce their carbon footprint, but also make huge electricity savings by changing North Bristol’s old inefficient lighting to LED and also embarked upon installing solar PV throughout their estate. In addition, they realised that they could improve the hospitals environment for both staff and patients by installing new lighting therefore, creating a calmer and more efficient atmosphere.

After successfully winning the contract through this UK wide tender process, Energy Efficient Solutions Group (EES Group) were appointed to upgrade 11 of North Bristol NHS’s buildings to LED and to install solar PV on 5 of its buildings.

Once delivered it was estimated that the project saved North Bristol NHS Trust a total of 322.37 tCO2e Carbon tonnes per year with total Annual electricity costs savings of £364,484 per year.

One of the key innovations that EES Group helped North Bristol NHS Trust deliver was the installation of the most up-to-date and specialised emergency lighting and monitoring system fully compliant with BS 5266-1 regulations.  This special set up included a remote-controlled monitoring system with control room functionality. The software provided the optimal solution of economical operation and a complete building safety lighting system.

The commitment that North Bristol NHS Trust has given to EES Group in helping them reduce their carbon footprint highlights the long-term working relationship, the quality of work, innovation in design and value for money that we provide.

The success of this ongoing and sustainable project is due to the team at EES Group having the ability to provide each building with the required LED luminaires and controls and the design of the most effective solar PV arrays, along with an experienced and professional installation team that undertook the work.
