University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Trust (UHBWT) set a target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, aligned with their “Sustainable Development Strategy.” As part of this commitment, UHBWT invested in the installation of LED lighting across its 10 specialist hospitals and clinics. EES Group was initially selected through a competitive tender process in 2019 to complete a lighting upgrade in the hospital’s public and common areas. After successfully delivering this first phase, EES Group were awarded further phases to extend LED lighting across all clinical and patient care areas, including a complete upgrade of the emergency lighting infrastructure.

Challenges
The project posed two primary challenges. Firstly, working within an active hospital environment required the lighting upgrades to be performed with minimal disruption to patient care and hospital operations. Completing upgrades in this sensitive setting meant navigating a high-traffic environment where continuous patient access was essential.
The second challenge involved meeting the technical demands specific to healthcare facilities. This included the installation of specialist lighting and an advanced emergency lighting system with remote monitoring capabilities, ensuring the infrastructure would meet rigorous standards for both operational efficiency and sustainability.
Solutions
To minimise disruptions in the active hospital environment, EES Group’s project manager worked closely with UHBWT to adapt the work schedule to hospital needs. This included performing upgrades during off-peak hours, especially in high-traffic and patient care areas, to avoid interference with daily hospital activities. This client-focused, adaptable approach allowed the team to carry out the project smoothly and efficiently.
For the technical demands, EES Group implemented state-of-the-art lighting solutions tailored to meet the healthcare setting’s unique requirements. The installed lighting included remote monitoring technology, enabling real-time management and simplified maintenance of the emergency lighting systems. These upgrades ensured a robust and sustainable lighting infrastructure that aligned with the Trust’s high standards.
Outcome
Upon completion, UHBWT achieved a 73% reduction in energy use, contributing to an annual carbon reduction of 31,050,906 kg CO₂e. The Trust’s testimonial commended EES Group for its client-centred management style, industry expertise, and commitment to a flexible and efficient project execution. The project outcome effectively supported UHBWT’s sustainability objectives and strengthened their progress towards a carbon-neutral future.
