Bridgwater and Taunton College, Cannington Campus

Bridgwater and Taunton College partnered with EES Group to enhance its sustainability efforts by installing a solar PV system. The aim was to reduce the college’s carbon footprint, lower energy costs, and provide long-term financial savings. The project, delivered in line with the college’s commitment to green energy, marks a significant milestone in their journey toward a more sustainable future.

Project Delivery: Business Case Development

To ensure the project aligned with the college’s financial and environmental objectives, EES Group crafted a comprehensive business case that emphasised both immediate and long-term advantages. The strategy involved a detailed analysis of the return on investment, outlining not only the financial savings but also the measurable energy efficiencies and reductions in carbon emissions. By providing clear, data-driven insights, we demonstrated how the project would deliver tangible value—lowering operational costs through energy savings while also contributing to the college’s sustainability targets. This dual focus ensured the project met key economic and environmental goals, strengthening its viability and impact.

Key elements of the business case included:

  • Cost-Benefit Analysis: We outlined potential electricity savings and carbon reductions over a 25-year period, showing the college how the project would result in substantial financial benefits.
  • Custom Design: The PV system was tailored specifically to the college’s energy needs and roof space, ensuring maximum efficiency and output.

Challenges

Given the unique structure of the state-of-the-art nuclear training facility, which includes a virtual reality environment, reactor simulator, and computer-equipped training rooms, meticulous attention was paid during the design phases regarding fire safety, system isolation and training to ensure complete compliance with RC62 guidelines.

Solution

The 58.5kWp solar PV system installed on the college’s flat roof features 130 solar panels, 2 inverters, and 90 SolarEdge optimisers. It is projected to produce approximately 52.53MWh of clean electricity each year, cutting carbon emissions by around 10.2ct annually. This reduction is comparable to planting 467 trees every year.

Services Provided:

  • Comprehensive Solar PV Design to RIBA Stage 4
  • Full supply, installation, commissioning and testing
  • 24/7 online monitoring platform

Testimonial

“At Balanced Energy, our clients’ trust in us is paramount, which is why we are selective about the partners we introduce to them. Bridgwater & Taunton College has been a valued client of ours for three years, and when it came to optimising their decarbonisation potential at the Cannington site, we had no hesitation in recommending Energy Efficient Solutions. EES’s professional expertise and shared commitment to purpose-driven, ethical business practices – as fellow B Corps – made them an ideal partner. Their approach goes beyond simply providing solutions; they work collaboratively to ensure that every project achieves the maximum environmental benefit. The Cannington site has been an excellent example of how collaboration can drive meaningful progress, and we’re proud to have introduced EES to the College, confident that they would deliver results that align with our high standards of quality and sustainability.”
