Red Kite Learning Trust

Red Kite Learning Trust is a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) comprising 14 schools across North and West Yorkshire. Serving over 9,750 students, the Trust spans early years, primary, secondary, and sixth form education, and is committed to delivering outstanding teaching and learning environments for its students and staff.

Faced with rising energy costs, the Trust sought to make its estate more energy-efficient. Their objective was clear: reduce operational costs through sustainable energy solutions and reinvest the savings into upgrading facilities and enhancing the educational experience across its schools.

Working across multiple live school environments posed logistical challenges, particularly ensuring that daily school operations remained uninterrupted and that all work met the highest health and safety standards. Through this collaboration, LVS Ascot is setting an example of environmental action while benefitting from reduced operational costs and long-term energy sustainability.

what we did…

Our Approach

We adopted a collaborative, consultative approach from the outset—working closely with both the central Red Kite Learning Trust team and senior leaders at each individual school. Recognising that each site had its own operational routines, physical layout, and safeguarding considerations, we developed a bespoke delivery plan for every location.

Key to the success of this project was flexibility and open communication. We conducted comprehensive site surveys and planning meetings to fully understand each school’s constraints and preferences, and then co-developed delivery timelines that aligned with their academic calendars and day-to-day operations.

To meet the Trust’s ambitious deadlines without compromising safety or learning:

  • Term-time installations were delivered with robust health and safety measures in place. Our teams operated discreetly in designated zones, using phased working hours and strict access controls to ensure pupils and staff remained safe and undisturbed.

  • Holiday-period installations were scheduled for schools where more invasive works were required, allowing for faster turnaround without impacting classroom time.

We coordinated multiple installations concurrently across different sites, supported by a central project management team that ensured all works met safeguarding protocols, quality benchmarks, and compliance standards. This proactive, multi-site delivery approach helped drive efficiency, reduce lead times, and mitigate risk.

The Solution

Our team designed and installed a solar PV system with a total output of 904.91 kW, distributed across 12 school sites. Each system was optimised to maximise solar generation based on the specific roof spaces and orientation of the buildings.

Beyond reducing utility costs, the systems were engineered with long-term performance and sustainability in mind. They integrate seamlessly into each school’s energy infrastructure, with remote monitoring capabilities and built-in scalability for future upgrades.

This project directly supports Red Kite Learning Trust’s commitment to environmental responsibility, contributing to its long-term goal of achieving net zero carbon status.

The Results

Delivered ahead of schedule – All installations were successfully completed within a five-month window, despite working across multiple sites with differing needs.
Seamless integration with school operations – Thanks to detailed planning and site-by-site adaptability, the project caused no disruption to teaching, safeguarding, or school activities.
Tangible financial savings – Significant reductions in energy bills will enable the Trust to redirect funds into enhancing learning environments and upgrading facilities.
Demonstrable environmental impact – The installation positions the Trust as a sustainability leader in the education sector, reducing its carbon emissions and supporting wider environmental education for pupils.
Future-focused infrastructure – The systems provide a resilient, clean energy supply that protects the Trust from future energy price volatility.
